HEIRLOOM SILVER

In the past, wealthy families spent a lifetime collecting ornate, expensive silverware, with plans to eventually hand them down to their heirs. Entertaining with the “good” silver was a visible way for a family to show off their wealth and status. Southern debutantes to show their good breeding, enjoyed the tradition of showcasing vintage silver for lavish dinner parties and teas. (while wearing her heirloom pearls of course!)

In Victorian times, proper dining and entertaining etiquette was a major indicator of class and wealth. Excessive attention was paid to utilizing the proper dinnerware, necessitating an almost endless variety of utensils and serving pieces. The Victorian hostess had a specific utensil for every individual item. These ornate embellished pieces made upper-class dining into an event.

Today’s young woman or men may still want to showcase the family silver to demonstrate the many affluent generations that preceded them. But, what if you don’t have an affluent history or at least you weren’t gifted with any heirloom silver? Flea markets and Tag sales are a good source of old fashioned silverware, as are collector sites on the internet. In fact collecting silver can become a fun hobby and you can use what you collect.

One of my favorite Holiday traditions is polishing my heirloom silver collection for use during Thanksgiving & Christmas. Polishing and placing these pieces, remind me of my mother, who chose her silver pattern as part of her wedding registry. I remember her wearing her pearls and heels, serving Christmas dinners with an apron over her dress. I always thought my mother was terribly glamorous. Even though my family wasn’t especially affluent, I treasure the silverware and china I inherited. However, I didn’t want to store my silver out of sight. I wanted to display it…but how?

My solution was to find a darling “lingerie” cabinet covered completely in beveled-edge mirrors with tiny velvet-lined drawers. I fitted them with felt silverware holders to hold and display my large collection of Heirloom silver as well as my incresing collection of vintage Victorian pieces and Cappuccino cups I had begun to collect. The cabinet turned out so beautifully that I placed it in my living room to add some “sparkle”

Now I have room for all my Victorian grapefruit spoons and seafood forks to be displayed and enjoyed…and used!

WRAP YOURSELF UP IN A LUXURIOUS “TUXEDO” LIFESTYLE!

What is Tuxedo style? First, it is genuine, not imitation. Real gold, real diamonds. Textures with sheen; velvet, ivory satin, silk…nothing nubby. It has the sleek minimalist look of Armani. It is Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart at the Baccarat bar. It is a lifestyle, a dream…it is your “theme”. It is 1920’s or 30’s formal elegance…Ice-cold martinis by the pool. A return to elegance that we have lost over the years. It is enjoyment of all the luxuries that life offers.

Living the “Tuxedo” Lifestyle gives you an elegant, rich-looking setting for your glamorous life! It is chic….but does not have to be expensive! For me, Tuxedo style is mostly Armani black and ivory with small touches of jewel-tones. It could also be Ralph Lauren’s East coast yachting style, the old-world elegance of Givenchy. West coast Hunting-cabin coziness, English equestrian or Hollywood Riviera glam…you decide. Have fun and pick a theme that fits you. Try to incorporate it into everything; your home decor, your clothing, your cuisine. Make a “Dream Board” with photos and pinterest ideas to help solidify the style in your mind. Have fun!

FINISHING SCHOOL FOR SOCIALITES

Definition: A finishing school is a school for women that focuses on teaching social graces and cultural rites as a preparation for entry into society. Wikipedia

Besides a college education, many of today’s Socialites are also sent to “Finishing Schools” to polish their manners. These social skills, not taught in colleges or universities, are in increasing demand in the new global business and social environment.

Old-fashioned finishing schools used to focus mostly on household management skills; entertaining skills…the skills required to be a wife and mother, but as times have changed and feminism has come to the forefront, the focus has switched more to career and international etiquette skills.

Interest in Finishing Schools is reviving as the need for specialized etiquette skills increases. Today’s Socialites are being taught critical skills, enabling them to take their place in the family business and move confidently through the new global community.  Learning basic cultural differences, how to address royalty, how to communicate in both the written and spoken word, gracious cell phone manners, entertainment etiquette as well as how to run business meetings in multiple cultures is important to today’s socialite.

Following are some of the course offerings:

  • How to set an agenda & lead business meetings
  • Personal money management
  • Image & Brand management,
  • Gala dress codes, ie: the difference between black-tie/white-tie dress
  • Wardrobe management
  • Care of jewels, furs & heirloom silver
  • Fine dining and wine selection skills
  • Appropriate gift giving
  • Cell-phone etiquette

These are just a few of the skills that the modern heiress will need in order to swim through the social waters of the upper class!

Have you met Anna Bey of the “School of Affluence” ? She runs an online Finishing School to teach elegance and how to network with the wealthy. She has graciously released numerous u-tube videos to share her ideas, but for the serious Socialite, attending her on-line Finishing School would be a wise investment in oneself.  See her u-tube videos at @annabeyschoolofaffluence.com.  Use this link to go straight to her videos: this week’s video!

The Timeless Romance of the “Champagne Cocktail”

Socialites and champagne…a match made in heaven!  Celebratory and Sexy, champagne cocktails are the height of elegance, fizzy with golden bubbles shimmering like diamonds. Of all the drinks one can enjoy, champagne is an incredible price-bargain for the amount of glamour it offers.  The old, boring us would automatically order a glass of wine or beer…but how much more elegant to order a glass of champagne or a champagne cocktail…fizzy, exciting and slightly mysterious….a drink that a “bad girl” might order.

To find a cocktail (or champagne cocktail) you enjoy, start researching ingredients that steer towards the flavor-profile you like.  You might want to memorize the ingredients too, in case the bartender isn’t familiar with it.  Also, note a cocktails appearance.  Would James Bond’s martini be as sexy without the green olive?  Would a daiquiri look as appealing without the frostiness? Once you have explored a bit, you might consider designating a “signature drink”…a drink that you would become known for & remind everyone of you.

Any Socialite worth her salt should know some cocktail history and knowledge of cocktail-ware.

Inspired by the mystery and glamour of 1920’s speakeasy culture, the saucer-shaped coupe became THE champagne glass used for high-society special-occasions in the 1930’s.  Reportedly inspired by the left breast of Marie Antoinette, the famed “Stork Club” adopted the classic coupe to serve its celebrity clientele with flair.  Used not only for Champagne, the Stork Club also utilized the coupe for recherché cocktails like the “Side car” and the “Daiquiri.” In the 1960’s, the coupe fell out of favor because the shallow bowl allowed champagne bubbles to dissipate too quickly. However this classic glassware is now finding a resurgence of interest with the Craft Cocktail movement and its focus on authenticity. Vintage champagne coupes are now in high demand…the opulent stemmed glassware with the saucer-shaped bowls can be found in vintage stores and on e-bay. Budget Socialites can experience the elegance of the 1930’s by serving classic champagne cocktails in coupes…perhaps served from vintage bar carts with classic bar accessories. Collecting vintage cocktail ware; jiggers, ice tongs, crystal ice buckets, etc. can be great fun. By collecting these remnants of a more glamorous time, we can relive the romance of the 30’s, an era when the cocktail hour was a luxurious necessity.
